As YOUR County Commissioner I will...

REDUCE POLITICAL PERKS
I believe that elected officials should serve out of a sense of duty and with honor and not to get rich on the backs of the taxpayers. We simply cannot afford lavish political perks and benefits that often continue long after elected officials leave office. As your County Commissioner, I will not accept medical or retirement benefits that cost you money.

VOTE NO ON PAY INCREASES
Unlike my opponent, I have NEVER voted to increase my compensation at any level of government. Far too often, elected officials have increased their pay on your tax dollars without providing you with any additional benefit. As your County Commissioner, I promise that I will NEVER vote to increase my pay, and I will aggressively oppose any attempts by others for increases at your expense.

INCREASE TRANSPARENCY
You have the right to know how your tax dollars are being spent. As your County Commissioner, I will aggressively support complete online disclosure of compensation and benefits for all elected officials.
Also, all entities that receive tax dollars should be required to make financial disclosures to ensure openness and transparency.

FIGHT FOR RIGHT-SIZE GOVERNMENT
Every year, county government is required to enforce many state laws without being provided the resources to do so. This means fewer of your hard earned county tax dollars are available to fund core services, such as police officers. A bipartisan commission has estimated that the annual cost to Michigan taxpayers of these unfunded mandates is in excess of $2 Billion.
As your County Commissioner, I will fight these big government style unfunded mandates.
I have written a letter to the editor (click here to view article) in the Oakland Press that addresses this issue.
Gail Haines, a Republican State Representative in Lansing has introduced a bill that also addresses unfunded mandates. Representative Haines has recently commented publicly on my role regarding this important issue.

PROVIDE NEW LEADERSHIP
Rochester and Rochester Hills residents need a new generation of leadership as their Commissioner at Oakland County. We need a leader who has the real-world experience to make sure that good decisions are made that are always in the best interests of the taxpayers.http://www.jeffmatis.com/images/oakpress_unfundedmandates.pdfshapeimage_1_link_0

Thank you for your support!

“Government at all levels must live within its means and not create unnecessary and costly programs that it cannot afford. To this end, I have introduced House Bill 5766 which addresses the significant economic problems of unfunded mandates. I applaud the actions of Rochester City Councilman Jeff Matis in being one of the first elected officials in Oakland County to publicly address this issue. Councilman Matis has the necessary background, experience, and strong work ethic to approach this important issue in order to benefit his constituents. I look forward to working with him in the future concerning this matter.”
